Description

Balance becomes particularly important when a horse carries a rider because the rider adds weight above the horse’s natural center of gravity. The horse therefore has to adjust how it distributes its weight and coordinate its muscles to remain stable and move efficiently (and we haven’t even added the rider’s influence on the horse’s head carriage).

A well-balanced horse can shift more weight towards the hindquarters, allowing the forehand to become lighter and the horse to use its back, abdominal muscles and hind limbs effectively. This creates a more coordinated movement and allows the horse to carry the rider without excessive loading of the forelimbs or tension through the back.

Good balance also helps the horse maintain rhythm, straightness and coordination when turning, accelerating, slowing down or changing gait. The horse can respond to the rider’s aids more easily because it is not constantly using its muscles simply to prevent itself from losing stability.

When balance is poor, the horse may compensate by becoming stiff through the back and neck, leaning on the forehand, rushing, losing rhythm or struggling with transitions and turns. Over time, inefficient movement can increase physical strain, particularly on the back, muscles, tendons and joints.

Ultimately, good balance creates a partnership in which the horse can carry the rider while remaining comfortable, stable and biomechanically efficient. The rider’s own balance is equally important: a centered, independent rider allows the horse to maintain its balance rather than having to compensate for the rider’s movements and actions.
